BORN Israel, February 4, 1974 Nava Waxman’s paintings are both abstract and metaphorical. The richness of earth-tone colors and atmosphere convey an intense emotional attachment to her subject matter. Her paintings depict scenes with electric wires, lanterns, ladders, naked winter trees, and birds suspended in anticipation. They remind the viewer of the sensitivity within and the fragile dance of life. Nava’s technique is an integral part of what distinguishes her as a unique artist. The physical qualities of the work are a result from layering drawings, ink, oil paint, collaged and found materials. Once the layers are fixed they are sealed with layers of beeswax, and then scratched and stained with pure pigment. It is the interaction of transparency and opaqueness that create a kind of kinetic energy which is visible throughout her paintings. Born in Israel in 1974, Nava Waxman moved to Toronto in 2003, where she began to pursue her life long passion for art. Nava embraced her opportunity to explore her creative side, spending her waking hours experimenting with materials and ideas. Nava’s inspiration comes from her surroundings and experiences. In the words of Nava Waxman, “It may be something that I observe, a feeling , a sound, a smell or a fleeting thought that will strike me and urge me to analyze and build upon them. From this I begin to construct visual metaphors, which will become the basis of my work.” SOLO June, 2008 - The Blue Dot Gallery - Toronto September, 2008 - OneLessAJury - Niagara Gallery - Toronto March, 2008- The Artist Project - Toronto September, 2007- Art in the 401 Richmond, Toronto September, 2007- G(Art)Fair, The IndexG Gallery September, 2007- "Insomnia" - Red head Gallery, Toronto September, 2007- Queen West Art Crawl - Toronto August, 2007- AWOL Gallery - Square foot show 2007 July, 2007 - Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition.
